Exhibition | Kaohsiung: Hans J. Wegner 100 Years Anniversary


I did a group project on 25 chairs for one of my LA classes last semester. I've always intrigued by designs - fashion, industrial, graphic... etc. Though people would think they are products, but I see them as art. When me and my group members were doing research on the must acknowledged chairs, Wegner was scoring the list. 

Those chairs are no longer just chairs, they are in museums or are now low-key collector's trophies. While doing the project, I thought to myself, would I be able to see these chairs in person one day? Luckily enough, it didn't take me too long to accomplish this fool's wish. I visited my hometown Kaohsiung, Taiwan during the winter break. It was the most unexpected surprise for me to come across this special anniversary exhibition about Wegner! It means more than words to be able to seeing a art piece that you've done projects on. The reason of studying art is for one day, you should be able to view the art work in a different perspective other than art, but a creation of the artist, the virtue behind the it in order to provide a good will to whoever pursue it. 

不久之前曾經做過一個團體報告,基於對於工業設計的喜愛,我和組員決定尋找決定性的 25 張設計師椅子,用美學以及實用的角度來分析這些設計,並且向出版社推銷這份書籍出版企劃。雖然只是範例企劃,我們也是花了很多時間在做研究,找資料,以及撰寫。於是雖然無法完全記住每張椅子的名字,起碼設計師的名字也記住了幾個,而其中韋格納讓我印象最深刻。

一份好的設計,是可以多方解剖而零破綻的。韋格納自己說,『我設計的椅子,沒有「背面」,因為每一個角度都是深思熟慮過的。』當然,像這樣的工業設計大師並不會認為自己是藝術創作者,對他來說,他的理念,就是為了設計一張好椅子,『任何一張椅子都不能稱之為椅子,直到有人坐在上面。』這樣的中心思想,讓他的設計充滿巧思以及對人類行為的精辟觀察。

回台灣放假的時候,在駁二巧遇了這一場百年回顧的經典展覽,我在研究過這些設計之後再親眼看到實品,突然明白,學習藝術的目的不在於研究藝術或是崇尚藝術品,而是學會用返璞歸真的眼光來觀看創作者最初的理念以及設計師與自我,以及對善的最大心意。
